Sending a Chat in Microsoft Teams from the Chat Tab

Type your message in the Message box and click the Send icon to send.

Type the name of the person you’d like to send a message to and press Enter.

Type Chat and hit Enter on your keyboard.

This lets Teams know you’re giving it a command.

Type a backslash into the Command bar at the top center of your Microsoft Teams window.

You can use it to change your presence, search through conversations, and start new conversations like calls and chats. The Command bar (or Search bar) has a lot of different functions in Microsoft Teams. Sending a Chat in Teams Using the Command Bar

Type your message in the message box and click the send icon to send.

You can type multiple names in this field to create a group chat. That’s how you send an instant message and create a group chat in Microsoft Teams. When we click on the new person, they’re automatically brought into the conversation.

From here we can search for new participants using their name or email address. In a conversation, use the Add People icon in the upper-right corner. You’ve already seen how we can create a group conversation using the New Chat icon, but we can also upgrade a conversation by adding more people on an ad-hoc basis. I’ll be prompted to type the name or email address of the person I’d like to chat with, and then I can type my message right into the command bar. I can also start a conversation from the command bar by typing in a backslash, which lets Teams know I’m about to give it a command, and then chat. Then I can press Enter or the Send icon to send my message. All I need to do to jump into this conversation is place my cursor in the message box and start typing. Teams will always keep your message history so you don’t lose important information. You’ll see that this brings up our chat history. You can enter as many people as you’d like here if you want to create a group chat from the start. Here, you can enter the name or email address of the person you’d like to chat with. When you click the New Chat button, you’ll be taken to the Chat tab. You can start a chat anywhere in Teams via the New Chat button or the Command Bar.
